Obituary of Rawle S. Brazzier

Rawle S. Brazzier passed away peacefully on June 15, 2020, at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, at the age of 79. Rawle was born to Aubrey Brazzier and Catherine Ida Balbosa-Brazzier on June 22, 1940, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies. After graduating from Nelson Street Boys Primary Catholic School, he went on to earn a diploma from John Donaldson Technical Trade School. He also studied at Queens Royal College in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Rawle’s hobbies as a young man were playing soccer and cricket. He was also an avid reader, enjoyed listening to classical music, playing instruments and being with family. He had a passion for music from a young age and became the Music Director of the well-known Carib Tokyo Steel Orchestra during the 1960s in Trinidad. He earned the nickname, “Maestro” for his musical ingenuity and leadership. He was also mentored in music during that time by Father Sewell, the Archbishop of the Holy Trinity Cathedral. He married his sweetheart, Josephine L. Clarke, who is also from Trinidad, on the island of St. Croix in 1971, and together they had their daughter, Anika. Upon migrating to the United States in 1972, Rawle was employed as a steamfitter for various mechanical and engineering firms under the New York City Local 638 Steamfitter’s Union for nearly 40 years. He also traveled to other states and Canadian provinces for work assignments under his union. In the 1990s, Rawle became a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Folks Arts Institute (TTFAI), in New York City, which annually honored renowned artists, such as writers, poets, painters and musicians who made significant contributions to the Caribbean diaspora. Rawle is survived by his wife, Josephine, daughter, Anika, siblings: Janet, Shirley, Marjorie, Elodie, Rueben, Grace, Renrick, Roddy and Peggy; nieces, Donna, Lorraine, Jennifer, Carol, Cathy, Gail, Liza, Denise, Diane and Helen; nephews Everton, Kirk, Anthony W., Anthony P., Neville, Glen, Rosanno, Hainsley, Ahmad and Garrett. He is preceded in death by his brother, Roland Brazzier, niece Patty Pyle, and son, Nick Brazzier. A viewing will be held for Rawle on Monday, June 22,2020 from 4PM-8PM at Ruggiero and Sons, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 732 Yonkers Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704. A Funeral mass will be celebrated by Rev. James Annor-Ohene on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at St. Ann’s Church, 854 Midland Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704 promptly at 10AM. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery at 4199 Webster Ave and East 233rd Street Bronx, NY 10470 on June 23, 2020 promptly at 11:30AM. Ruggiero and Sons, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Services will be handling all funeral arrangements.
