Obituary of Remo G. Carriero

Remo G. Carriero, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, October 8, 2020, at the age of 88. Remo Giulio Carriero was born on June 26th, 1932 in Gissi, Abruzzo, Italy. He was the son of Giovanni Carriero and Annina Nanni. At thirteen years old, Remo became a tailor, moved to Bologna, Italy at sixteen, and lived there until he was twenty-two. After moving back to Gissi, on July 12, 1954 he married Maria Santilli, and shortly after, left his family to move to the United States. Living the true American dream, Remo came to the US with 13 dollars in his pocket, a suitcase, and a dream. In 1958, Remo and Maria had their first son Giovanni, who predeceased him in 2013 and in 1960, their second son Remo Jr. was born. In the early years of being in the US, Remo worked as a tailor and opened two dry cleaners. He went on to work as a fur designer in Manhattan, NY, working for names such as Chattman Furman Designs, Emilio Gucci, and Antonovich Furs, under the title of top designer until his retirement in 1995. In 1986, Remo’s son Remo Jr. was married to Celia Arcuri, making Remo Sr. a grandfather in 1992 with the birth of their daughter Juliana, and again in 1993 with the birth of their second daughter, Jeanine. Remo was the epitome of family man, loving husband, father, father in-law and always catering to his two loving granddaughters. He was a great friend to many, also known to many as Papá. Remo helped start the Italian Mass every Sunday at St. Barnabas Church over forty years ago, which continues today. Remo was a proud member of the John D. Calandra Lodge of the Sons and Daughters of Italy in America for over twenty-five years. He was loved and will be missed by many. Donations in Remo's memory can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, www.StJude.org.
