Obituary of Stevie Danielle Leatha Bates

We gather here to celebrate a beautiful, joyful soul who was taken away before her time. Stevie Danielle Leatha Bates, our beloved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, was born on December 29, 1992 at 1:11 am in Sloane Hospital for Women in Manhattan NY, to her proud and loving parents, Vivian (Jones) and Steven Bates. She lived in the Bronx, NY for most of her life until she moved to Bronxville, NY. She also stayed in Brooklyn, NY with her sister and in Yonkers at the family’s new home for a brief time. Stevie attended Riverside Church in NYC during her preschool year, where she was in the choir and drama class. The next year in 1997 she began attending Times Square Church. In the year 2000 at the tender age of 7, Stevie made the decision to ask the Lord Jesus Christ to come into her heart. She was water Baptized on December 2, 2001. Stevie received her education through the New York City Public Schools Gifted and Talented Programs. She attended PS 171 Patrick Henry for Pre-k. From Kindergarten through 5th grade she attended PS 9 Anderson Program. For middle school, Stevie attended MS 54 Delta Honors program and later graduated from Bronx High School of Science. She went on to study Studio Art at Hunter College. Stevie Danielle Leatha Bates was a vibrant and breathtakingly beautiful individual with a free spirit. She was full of endearing affection, a trendsetter, who was unique in all her ways. Stevie was loaded with personality, charm and character. Shy but outgoing, innocent yet defiant, she was a passionate person who loved to laugh and bring joy. She was full of jokes and fun to be around. Her playfulness and wit could be found in almost everything she put her mind to—from fashion, cooking, making things, decorating and interior design, to parties, celebrations, song and dance. Though Stevie was a gentle soul, she was also an outspoken activist, a voice for herself and anyone else she believed was being treated unjustly. Her love was fierce and fearless. She had the ability to see everyone just as they were and find the best in them without hesitation. Stevie made sure her loved ones felt her unconditional love and acceptance. She was truly one of a kind. In her short life, she lived beyond her years. Her light will never dim or fade but continue to shine eternally bright in our thoughts, our prayers, our memories of her, and most of all our hearts. Stevie is survived by her mother Vivian Jones, father, Steven Bates, stepfather Darryl Jones, two sisters Synphany (and Nora) Bates Zale and Sherina Bates, two brothers, Darnell Bates and Darryl Jones, Jr., two nieces Shali Frazier and Desi Thomas, three nephews Ali Frazier, Desmond Thomas and Enzo Bates Zale, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She is predeceased by all her grandparents, Azalea and Samuel Bates, Vincenza DeRobertis aka Jennie Vactor (Charles Vactor) Herbert Hester, and her cousin Michael Shields. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, April 18th from 12 PM - 4 PM at Ruggiero & Sons, Inc.
