Obituary of Sister Helen Kavanaugh

Sister Helen Kavanaugh, CND (Sr. St. Helen Margaret), a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame, died at Andrus-on-Hudson, in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, on April 23, 2021 at the age of 85. Born in Chicago, Sr. Kavanaugh was the daughter of John Kavanaugh and Nellie Moran. Sister completed her elementary education at Holy Rosary School and her secondary education at St. Louis Academy, both in Chicago. She earned a Bachelor of Science in English from Loyola University in 1957 and later earned a Master’s degree in English from the University of Notre Dame and a Certification in Theology from the Institute for Spiritual Leadership in Chicago. After professing her first vows as a Sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame on August 24, 1961 Sr. Kavanaugh served many years as a High School Teacher in Schenectady, NY, Waterbury, CT, Providence, RI, and St. Michael’s Indian School, AZ. She also served as Director of Formation for the Congregation and member of the Province Council. In Kankakee she taught and was Dean of Girls at Bishop McNamara High School and more recently ministered to the elderly and sick at Heritage Village and in parishes. In 2019, Sr. Kavanaugh retired to Andrus-on-Hudson where she continued her ministry of prayer and visitation through her phone calls with her brother Tim and daily encounters with her CND sisters and those who cared for her. Sr. Kavanaugh is mourned by her community, the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame, by her brother Tim from Tinley Park, IL and his family, and by her many friends and associates. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jack, and her sister Margaret. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 in the chapel of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield CT. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Danbury. Arrangements are being handled by Ruggiero Funeral Home, Yonkers, NY.
